It's official: Shell Chemicals' HiPERTUF [R] polyester and polyethlene napthalate (PEN) resins have been officially cleared by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration for use in food packaging. The clearance allows HiPERTUF copolymers and blends to be used throughout the U.S. for a wide range of applications, most notably juice, soft drink and beer containers a well as applications in hot-fill containers, cosmetics and pharmaceutical. Houston-based Shell Chemicals has had several packaging developments sing PEN, including beer bottles and baby food jars that are able to withstand retorting for extensive time periods (see PD, Feb. '99, p. 3).
