"Extended-content" cartons.(Brief Article)
Packaging Digest, September, 2000
The new FDA labeling requirements for OTC drug packages, which take effect in 2003, have spurred R&D into alternatives for packaging design. The FDA mandates require increased type sizes and greater amounts of information on OTC packages. The extended-content carton(ECC(tm)) helps meet the new regulations and creates more "billboard" space on the packages to preserve brand identity elements.
One design provides a larger surface area by creating a fold-out panel as part of the carton exterior. Sealed to the carton body, the panel can be easily opened by consumers to reveal compliance information underneath and then be re-sealed to maintain brand identity and product promotion.
