E-business strategy has changed the mix within the co.'s PE unit. With a commodity-oriented product base that is subject to high price volatility and relatively low product margins, the unit saw e-business as a way to cut costs, improve financial performance and better meet the needs of customers.

Digitizing its 300-page product notebook onto a CD-ROM allows customers to assess the co.'s entire PE product line or compare the products to their competition. Content updates are easily made and reach customers in a matter of days. The launch of the Customer Center in 1999 (at www.eastmanmarketplace.com) to sell off-spec product and expand market reach to the convenience buyer.
