Specifying batteries for UPS system. (uninterruptible power supply)

Plant Engineering, March, 1991 by Migliaro, Marco W.

In yesteryear, the use of stationary batteries in manufacturing plants was essentially confined to switchgear control, and the control and powering of ultracritical operations - such as steel mill ladle dumpers and chemical manufacturing processes where a power failure could culminate in disaster. Today, stationary batteries are commonplace in manufacturing plants, providing backup power to the inverter sections of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems in the event normal power supply is lost. UPS batteries normally operate in a full-float mode, with the UPS charger supplying all the requirements of the load plus the power needed to keep the battery at full charge. The battery serves the load only in the event that output power from the battery charger is lost....
