Furnace converted to gas = costs converted to savings. (Gas Technology)

Converting furnace from electric to natural gas burners reduces costs 54%

The ABB Power T&D Company facility in Jefferson City, MO, manufactures distribution transformers for the electric utility industry. The company, part of the Swiss-headquartered ABB group, uses two single-roller hearth furnaces to anneal transformer laminations. Until 1991, both of these furnaces used electric burners.

"I knew natural gas offered us a considerable price benefit over electricity," explained ABB Advanced Manufacturing Engineer Jim Kliethermes, "but, until Eclipse developed a burner that would fit into the single end of a tube, we felt conversion of the furnaces to natural gas was too difficult and costly."
