Sparked by an increase in American sales of Barbie dolls and other basic toys, Toys R Us reported a 26 percent boost in first-quarter earnings. The Paramus, N.J., specialty chain said that earnings rose to $28.3 million or 10 cents a share, from $22.4 million, or 8 cents a share, in the same quarter of 1991. Sales for the world's largest toy retailer rose almost 14 percent to $1.17 billion from $1.03 billion.

Charles Lazarus, company chairman, said strong sales in basic toy categories were responsible for a 4.7 percent rise in domestic same-store sales and had strengthened the company's profit margins.
