Playthings' picks for the holiday season They're the gotta-haves. The pleeeease-mommies. The no-matter-what-else-I-get-my-kid-he-won't-be-happy-unless-I-find-this -toy. Having the hot toy of the holiday season can make or break a manufacturer and turn a retailer into a savior. But trying to predict what kids will be clamoring for come December ain't easy.
Some holiday hits sprout out of nowhere, like POGS. Others were introduced in June, like Tickle Me Elmo, and only started a frenzy when Rosie O'Donnell plugged them on her show. Pokemon, Furby, Power Rangers, Cabbage Patch Kids, Teddy Ruxpin--all of these products were on the shelves well before the holiday season.
