Hand-eye coordination. Gross motor skills. Cognitive development. To the infant toy manufacturer, such terms are standard marketing terminology, often part of product packaging that aims to tout a plaything's intended benefits.

But to the average first-time parent, these words could be cause for head scratching. While they may be fun to spout at the playground, chances are, many new moms and dads may not be aware of their intended meanings--or if a toy proclaiming those capabilities is even something that's age-appropriate for their child.
