Why are we going in Bosnia? (U.S. Secretary of Defense William J. Perry)(Transcript)

Presidents & Prime Ministers, January, 1996

U.S. troops are being sent to Bosnia to participate in the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement, along with other NATO forces and troops from 15 non-NATO countries. Russian troops will also be participating as part of an American division. The main tasks for the American troops will involve establishing and maintaining a zone of separation between the Bosnian Serb and Bosnian Federation armies, monitoring the return of heavy weapons and troops, and ensuring a safe environment to allow civil functions of infrastructure rebuilding to be accomplished. Forces are expected to be in Bosnia for one year.

This excerpt is from a speech by US Secretary of Defense William J. Perry to the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC, December 7, 1995....
