Beef packers see red, cut back kill hours.

Pro Farmer, October, 2006

Tyson Foods, Swift and National Beef all announced last week they have or will cut hours at cattle slaughter plants.

Swift said it is running three of its plants only 32 to 37 hours per week, while Tyson will operate its plants at 35 to 40 hours a week. Tyson said that would reduce production by about 12,000 head.

National Beef announced it would run its Kansas operations about 37 hours vs. a current level of 40 to 48 hours.

BOTTOM LINE: The sluggish pace of rebuilding U.S. beef exports is a key culprit. Packers clearly aren't willing to cut in the red without the prospect of shipping more U.S. beef overseas.
