NOAA now warning of a move to La Nina conditions.

In the Feb. 24 issue, we detailed how the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) were not "on the same page" regarding the status of La Nina. While the Aussies were warning of a shift to La Nina, NOAA said it was "too early" to put confidence in such a forecast. It looks like all NOAA needed was just one more week to gain that confidence.
La Nina is a pool of cooler-than-normal sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean (circled on map below). La Nina events sometimes follow El Nino episodes and many weather watchers say the quick drop of SSTs in the transition from El Nino is associated with drier-than-normal conditions in the U.S. Midwest.
