As expected, corn crop conditions slump.

Pro Farmer, June, 2007

When the first USDA Crop Condition Report for corn was released, we warned the rating set the bar exceptionally high and that significant crop deterioration would be reflected in upcoming condition updates. That happened last week.

After peaking at nearly 394, the Pro Farmer Crop Condition Index (CCI) for corn drifted down to 390, then plunged last week to 377. Still, a crop rating of 377 is very good and suggests at least trendline yield potential. With Midwest corn within a month of pollination, traders will begin to monitor crop conditions even more closely and further deterioration should help limit selling interest in new-crop corn.
