CHASE, BURGER KING TEST MONDEX CARDS.

Chase manhattan bank and Mondex USA have begun a consumer pilot of Mondex smart cards at four Burger King restaurants in Long Island, New York.

The six-month test marks the first time that a retailer is directly distributing Mondex cards, according to Janet S. Crane, president and chief executive officer of San Francisco-based Mondex USA.

In the test, customers can buy $10 or $20 Mondex cards from card dispensers in two Burger Kings in Garden City (one of which is in a major metro-area mall), one in Westbury and one in Hempstead, N.Y. The cards, made by Gemplus, show the Burger King logo in the center. Giesecke & Devrient America supplied the card dispensers.
