Microsoft introduces mobile applications server.

SAN FRANCISCO-Microsoft Corp. introduced an addition to its Microsoft.NET server family. Mobile Information Server is a scalable mobile applications server designed to provide enterprise customers and mobile network operators with a platform for delivering real-time mobile data services to any wireless device.

The server is expected to ship in the first half of 2001. Microsoft also unveiled Outlook Mobile Access, the initial application available for the company's Mobile Information Server, enabling real-time access to Microsoft Exchange Server-based personal information management applications such as e-mail, calendar, contacts and tasks, all from a mobile phone.
