IBM Corp. and Infineon Technologies AG plan to jointly develop a magnetic RAM technology that could replace much of today's computer memory technology. The companies said they will be working on magnetic memory chips, which use magnetic rather than electrical structures, to store information.

This, the companies said, would make the new chips less expensive to build and would allow them to retain data without being constantly powered.
