While the U.S. wireless penetration rate nationwide recently topped 40 percent, more than half of households in the top 25 U.S. markets subscribe to wireless services, according to the recently released J.D. Power and Associates 2001 U.S. Wireless Industry Services Study.

The report noted that while wireless penetration continues to grow, the cost for wireless calls fell from 56 cents per minute in 1995 to 14 cents per minute this year, a result making it harder for carriers to maintain their bottom lines. The report showed that average monthly spending for wireless services has dropped from $66 last year to $61 this year, with the average time a customer stays with a carrier falling from 2.5 years in 1999 to 2.4 years.
