Japan's 3G rollouts encounter obstacles.

While once seen as the leading country in the deployment of third-generation services, Japanese carriers have fallen back to the pack amid the same technical problems that have kept Europe and the United States floating in between the present and future networks.

The country's three wireless providers, NTT DoCoMo Inc., J-Phone Communications Co. Ltd. and KDDI Corp., have all had to reschedule their 3G network launches to tie up network loose ends--moves not expected to impact customer uptake of the services, which the Yankee Group expects to top 13 million by 2005.
