The U.S. specialized mobile radio industry often has been thought of as cellular's sideshow since the two services were created in the 1970s. Cellular has attracted headlines with its staggering growth and revolutionary services, while SMR has trudged along quietly, providing a less-sexy, but still important, service to business users.
