WASHINGTON -- Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill last week attempted to broker a deal with Senate moderates on a $75 billion economic stimulus package that could include accelerated wireless equipment depreciation for one year and tax credits for two years on infrastructure purchased for broadband Internet deployment in rural and underserved areas.

The Senate economic stimulus bill, crafted by Democrats who want to help laid off workers as well as hard-hit businesses, is up for debate this week. The House passed a more ambitious $100 billion economic stimulus last month. The bill did not include tax breaks for wireless and Internet equipment, though initial efforts were made by Reps.
