FCC to address number allocations, views clash. (News).

WASHINGTON--There may be a split on the Federal Communications Commission as to whether states should have more say in the allocation of telephone numbers. FCC Commissioner Kevin J. Martin last week said they should, while FCC Commissioner Kathleen Q. Abernathy told RCR Wireless News that the FCC should have primary jurisdiction over numbers.

States "feel the brunt when area codes are continuously split," said Martin during his monthly press briefing. While Abernathy agreed that states are "on the front lines" of numbering issues, she believes the FCC should have primary authority. Martin also expressed support for technology-specific overlays.
