Chipmakers' 3G bets murky. (Business).

As the economy continues to hand out little hope for a fast recovery, chipmakers are realizing the path to glory requires more than just the guts they produce for cellular phones and other wireless devices. Since many of their prospects rely on the rollout of next-generation services, chipmakers are counting on carriers to spur subscriber uptick and enthusiasm for new services that will run on these new handsets.

So far, marquee names in the chip sector like RF Micro Devices, Motorola Inc., Samsung Electronics and Infineon have not benefited from 3G technology, although these companies say some light can be seen on the horizon.
