Years from now, the wireless industry will trace the first battle cry to Cannes, France, a city famed more for film festivals than the ring tones of cell phones.

On software and hardware fronts, the marquee companies are not holding back any wireless punches. The software scoreboard reads: Microsoft Corp. vs. Nokia Corp.

In an adjoining arena, hardware fighter Texas Instruments Inc. is dueling rival Intel Corp. Analysts think the battles will be fought hard and long.
