Rep. Billy Tauzin CR-La.), chairman of the House Commerce Committee, and Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the House telecommunications subcommittee, urged President George W. Bush on July 5 to protect the telecom infrastructure if WorldCom Inc. goes bankrupt. Copies of the letter were also sent to Michael Powell, chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, Stephen Perry of the General Services Administration, Tom Ridge, director of homeland security, and Hardwick Simmons, chairman of the Nasdaq Stock Market Inc.
