Although a range of computer and media companies have been harping on the issue of digital rights management, and even legislators in Washington have been gearing up to tackle the topic, most of the industry's wireless carriers have taken a somewhat passive approach to the situation. "They're not used to these kinds of issues," said David Bluhm of Mforma, which manages a wireless developer pool and an application technology platform for sale to carriers.

"They haven't burned a lot of the midnight oil on this problem." Bluhm said wireless carriers have had a lot of other issues to deal with, from sinking stock prices to multimillion dollar network upgrades, and they have pushed copyright protection issues to the back burner.
