With all of the nationwide wireless operators offering some form of next-generation packet-data service, the industry is turning to regional operators for the next rollout of high-speed data services. Three of the largest regional operators that have announced data plans include Alltel Corp.
and U.S. Cellular Corp., which will both use a cdma200 1x-based network, and Dobson Communications Corp., which is overlaying its TDMA voice network with GPRS data capabilities. Regional carriers are netting mat even though they will be later to market with data offerings, they will be able to close that competitive gap through superior customer service.
