With bated breath, the wireless e-mail market is watching the pitched battle between BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd. and patent-holding company NTP Inc.

NTP claims patents covering the basic mechanics of wireless e-mail, and in 2002, a jury sided with the company's allegations that RIM infringes on those patents. Although RIM continues to appeal the case, the issue threatens to spill into other vendors' laps. Wiley Rein & Fielding L.L.P. represents NTP, and attorney James Wallace heads up the case. Wallace has more than 30 years' experience litigating patents, with cases covering the pharmaceutical, satellite and imaging industries.
