Imagine, for a moment, that you are a computational biologist and want to ask a question like, "Show me all the genes that are similar to nitric oxide synthetase." It turns out this can be a pretty tricky question. If you are interested in proteins, you would have to search the Nil database at the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI). If you are interested in nucleotides, you would need to search the NT database at NCBI instead. Now imagine typing that question into Google.com. What would your expectation be?
