When the University of Maryland experienced a sharp increase in campus crime, authorities treated the problem very seriously. School officials were all too aware of the circumstances surrounding the Clery Act and wanted to be in compliance.
Jeanne Ann Clery was a 19 year old freshman at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. She was raped and murdered while asleep in her residence hall room on April 5, 1986. After discovering that Lehigh students had not been advised of 38 other violent crimes on campus in the three years before her murder, Jeanne's parents helped persuade Congress to enact the "Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990."
