Sony helm takes westward turn.(quick cuts)

SONY CORPORATION OF JAPAN STUNNED THE business world early last month by appointing a westerner, the Welsh-born (and non-Japanese speaking) Sir Howard Stringer (top right), as its chairman and chief executive. The appointment enlists him in a select group of foreigners to hold such top posts in Japanese companies.

An American citizen, Sir Howard joined Sony in 1997 and presided over a resurgence in profitability of Sony Corporation of America, the company's United States division. Coming from a 30-year background in television news as a journalist, producer and executive at CBS, he adds particular luster to Sony's entertainment businesses.
