Facsimile machine technology is rapidly becoming a standard feature of the educational environment. Fax can be used to transmit documents, applications, letters of recommendation, administrative materials and research materials. It has the capacity to benefit students, faculty, researchers and library staff. There are currently over 100 different types of stand-alone fax machines on the market. They range in cost from $700 for a unit with minimal features to $25,000 for one capable of sending messages to thousands of other units. The most common features offered by fax machines are automatic dialing, one-touch keys and speed-dial keys. Using Group 3 standards, fax machines are capable of a transmission speed of 9,600-bps.
