California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) is using CAD software to provide engineering students with a meaningful design experience. The engineering department is using MicroStation CAD and mapping software from Intergraph Corp to accomplish this goal and plans to incorporate the software into all of its design courses by the 1995-96 school year. Freshman develop a working foundation on the use of MicroStation through a two-unit introductory class. About 12 design classes utilize MicroStation and the MasterWorks suite of engineering applications, including the Civil Engineering Design Series, three major, senior-level, design classes that require finished drawings for a final project.
