"The state is your campus." In 1983, the state of Arizona presented Northern Arizona University (NAU) with that challenge and opportunity. It gave the school a charter to provide undergraduate and graduate programs to timebound and place-bound citizens throughout Arizona. The only exceptions were Maricopa County, home of Arizona State University, and Pima County, where the main University of Arizona Campus is located.
NAU responded by having professors crisscross the state by car, later purchasing an airplane to ferry instructors to remote sites. When these modes of transportation became too time-consuming and cost-prohibitive, they turned to technology.
In 1992, the university began construction on a truly interactive distance learning network...
