China revives plan on wireless encryption rules.(ISO)

According to a media report, China has formed a group of 22 members comprising telecom and computer firms in China. The alliance would take efforts to encourage the use of country's wireless communication encryption standard, known as wireless authentication and privacy infrastructure (WAPI). According to China ,WAPI is more secure for mobile phones, laptop computers, and other equipment. The group includes Huawei Technologies and Lenovo Group. The regulator and other measures to be adopted by the new alliance are not yet clear.

During 2004, Beijing tried to make the WAPI standard compulsory. However, the same was not implemented, as overseas companies stated that this would affect their entry into China. The technology control in China is allowed to only...
