Walt Disney Television International appears to have run into a roadblock in its bid to expand its India business. Disney's local partner, the KK Modi group, is said to have objected to Disney's attempt to establish a wholly owned subsidiary in India. The subsidiary would operate the 24-hour satellite channel in India and, further down the line, may expand into theme parks and other ventures.
India's Foreign Investment Promotion Board has postponed its decision on Disney's application, which is apparently being studied by the Information and Broadcasting Ministry and the industrial policy and promotion department. Disney's existing venture with Modi covers programme syndication in India. The contract runs until late 2002. According to policy...
