News wars have broken out in Thailand as the country's channels vie for current affairs audiences and ad dollars. Thailand's Independent TV (ITV), which embarked on a broader entertainment strategy earlier this year, is now returning to its original strengths and has announced a plan to expand its news format as part of a US$2-million upgrade, iTV's announcement came on the eve of the November 6 launch of the Mass Communications Organisation of Thailand's (MCOT) Modern TV (the former Channel 9) with, among other initiatives, a new 24-hour news format.

Modern TV/ Channel 9's programming revamp is costing US$476,000. iTV is required to air news for 7.5 hours a day.
