Despite the obvious advantages of television choice (especially for niche channels), Hong Kong's two new broadband players are little more than warm-up acts to pay-TV's big battle between incumbent, i-Cable Communications' Hong Kong Cable TV, and new Intelsat-TVB direct-to-home satellite platform, Galaxy.

For the moment, best bets are that Hong Kong Cable TV will maintain the dominant position, with active fire between opposing forces not expected before second quarter 2004--and even then industry sources say Galaxy may take three years or more to secure its position. Galaxy plans to put something up before the end of the year, although few expect an official launch until next year.

By end August, Galaxy had not disclosed its programming...
