TEN years ago mainframe software suppliers had the market all to themselves. Today one simple statistic highlights their plight. Worldwide there are around 35,000-40,000 IBM mainframes. IBM and IBM-compatible PCs total well over 10m. It is hard for mainframe suppliers to match the sort of momentum such numbers can generate-particularly when aggressive microcomputer software marketing magnifies the already large disparity. Millions have bought Lotus 1-2-3 and millions more are familiar with it. But how many have heard of mainframe best-sellers like ADR's Datacom or Computer Associates' Unicenter?
