NINE years ago Sony created a product that gave English a new word. The Walkman has now gone visual. Nine inches long and three inches thick, the Video Walkman is the same size as an old-fashioned portable cassette player. Into that small space it packs a colour television and a video recorder. It is about to go on sale in Japan with a price tag of V 1 30,000 ($ 1, 000) and is set to be in the rest of the world's shops before Christmas. Discounting will soon cut the price. Technical improvements may halve the machine's size, as happened with the audio version. Competition will be fierce, because the most interesting thing about the machine is not its wondrous technology but its role as a combatant in the fight over video standards.
