LIGHTBULBS and bright ideas go together, in cartoonists' minds if not quite often enough in reality. In the 112 years since Joseph Swan lit his incandescent lamp in Newcastle (or the 110 years since Thomas Edison displayed his in New Jersey), there have been few successful attempts at preventing lightbulbs from wasting quite so much energy as they do. Since lightbulbs capable of using up 48 billion watts-equivalent to 6% of the electricity produced from fossil fuels-are made every year, that is a pity. Mr Nelson Waterbury, an American inventor, thinks he can help.
