HAS the nomination of Robert Gates to lead the Central Intelligence Agency CIA) hit unexpected trouble? Mr Gates, a 47-year-old who is now in the White House as deputy national security adviser, was nominated by George Bush on May 14th. At first it was assumed that his confirmation hearings before the Senate Intelligence Committee would be over by the end of June, and that he would have no trouble being confirmed; David Boren, the Democratic senator from oklahoma who is the committee's chairman, said as much. But the committee has now said that it will not start its hearings until after Congress's july 4th break.
The committee's spokesman insists that the hearings have not been postponed, since no date for them had ever been set. And CIA sources are adamant...
