The American Civil Liberties Union recently filed lawsuits against two public high schools in Dallas, Texas. The lawsuits center on the practice of school prayer, which is common in Texas.
IN THE buckle of the Bible Belt, the Lord favours high-school athletics. The 11th commandment, they say in Texas, is "Thou shalt not fumble". Card-carrying members of the American Civil Liberties Union are as scarce in Texas as ice-storms.
But they can still snarl things up. Two disputes, to do with school and with prayer, have recently gone to court in the Dallas area. in both of them the ACLU brought suit over public religious ceremonies connected with high-school athletics. Both set off acrimonious debates.
