Moderate Governor Bill Clinton of Arkansas made several highly successful speeches recently and has improved his chances in the crucial New Hampshire primary. He also hired consultant James Carville, architect of the recent Harris Wofford upset victory. Clinton is now the acknowledged front-runner.

THIS has been a terrific month for Bill Clinton, the governor of Arkansas and a Democratic candidate for the presidency. Which is terrible news for him. He is now the man to beat.

Mr Clinton started poorly. He took longer than expected to enter the race. He was dogged by a promise, made during his reelection campaign in 1990, that he would serve out his term as governor; and dogged even more by the gothic character of his home state, where all who do not claim...
