Arlen Spector's skeptical attitude towards Anita Hall's testimony against Clarence Thomas may cost him his job as senator of Pennsylvania. His opponent, Lynn Yeakel, a woman and a newcomer to politics, is running even with him in opinion polls .
THE modish political emotion of this year is "rage", and the smuggest political cliche is that "they" (for which read men in general and Washington men in particular) "just don't get it". Arlen Specter, Anita Hill's Republican inquisitor on the Senate Judiciary Committee during the Clarence Thomas hearings, didn't get it when he accused Miss Hill of perjury exactly a year ago. Rage, Mr Specter is only too aware, might on November 3rd cost him his once-impregnable incumbency.
Until this year scarcely any Pennsylvanians...
