Nigel Lawson would be an unpopular choice as governor of the Bank of England, but he would be the appropriate choice. Despite popular opinion that the former Chancellor of the Exchequer is to blame for Britain's economic troubles, his economic policies are sound.

SOON the British government will decide who is to be the next head of the country's central bank. The betting is on another City hand, like the present governor, Robin Leigh-Pemberton. It may once have made sense to appoint a banker to this job, as tradition requires, but it no longer does. Least of all when a much better candidate, with a far more appropriate background, happens to be available--none other than the former chancellor, Lord Lawson.

Only a bold government could announce such a decision,...
