Symphony orchestras in the US had a deficit of $23 million in 1991, and many are paring down radio broadcasts of live performances and debuts of new works. Many symphony orchestras may hold more 'pop' concerts of popular classics to boost finances.

EVERY concert by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra is preceded by a 45-minute talk about the music on the bill. On a typical night, about 40% of the ticket-holders turn up for the teach-in. They often need it: the guiding spirit behind the orchestra, Ernest Fleischmann, is sniffy about music as "sheer entertainment". Recently it gave the first American performance of a new violin concerto by a Hungarian composer, Gyorgy Ligeti. Even Mr Fleischmann thought that was "a tough nut" (but his concert-goers cracked it)....
