Alain Prestat's debt-ridden Thomson Consumer Electronics (TCE) faces daunting challenges as it strives to return to profitability. TCE's losses in 1992 may exceed $300 million, and competitor Philips may gain an advantage with its new technologies and aggressive turnaround strategy.
FRANCE'S new industry minister, Gerard Longuet, will inherit two high-technology headaches from his predecessor. One is Groupe Bull, the country's computer champion. The other is Thomson Consumer Electronics (TCE), part of the state-owned Thomson group, which also makes semiconductors and defence electronics. TCE, which will soon unveil its 1992 results, lost an estimated FFr1.7 billion ($309m) last year, which was less than the FFr2.5 billion it lost in 1991, but still appalling. Unless...
