US computer makers are concerned that Japan is subsidizing its domestic computer industry by allowing schools to purchase computers exclusively from NEC Corp. NEC computers are more expensive than those of US competitors, who have made inroads in the Japanese market.
LURKING in Japan's YEN 13.2 trillion ($116 billion) supplementary budget, unveiled in April, was an intriguing proposal. As part of a plan to create a "new social infrastructure", the government said it would buy 330,000 personal computers between now and 1996 for use in state schools. The new infrastructure is supposed to create a computerised Japan packed with fibre-optic information "highways". Leading the effort has been Tadahiro Sekimoto, chairman of NEC, Japan's fourth biggest computer company....
