Amory Lovins is the leading expert on alternative energy and energy conservation. His Rocky Mountain Institute operates on an annual energy bill of just $600 of electricity. The buildings feature glazed windows, heavy insulation, solar panels, and air-to-air heat exchangers.
WHENEVER environmentalists gather together to sing the praises of compact fluorescent lamps or carbon-fibre cars, their paean includes the name of Amory Lovins. Nobody has tried harder to convince Americans that existing technologies might save whole oil-wells of energy and thus many barrels of dollars. Part of Mr Lovins's charm is that he practises what he so relentlessly preaches.
