Intel Corp is developing the Pentium microchip, a 586 version that will replace the currently standard 486. The Pentium will increase the power of personal computers immensely, allowing for audio and video capabilities. Intel is using the 'superscalar' design method for the Pentium.

INTEL, the world's largest semiconductor manufacturer, is a phenomenally profitable firm. This year, it expects to sell 30m-40m powerful i486 microprocessors, mainly to the ever-growing personal-computer industry. These computers-on-a-chip cost between $20 and $30 to make. They sell for ten times that or more, providing a handsome margin. So it might come as a surprise to find people in the semiconductor industry who believe that Intel is not making as many microprocessors as it could....
