Japanese car makers believe that they are finally recovering, because of a 12% increase in sales in Aug 1994 over last year. But the Japanese have lost their global lead in making mass-produced cars of high quality. The US, Europe, and other Asian countries have adopted Japan's successful practices.
THREE months of rising sales in its home market have convinced the Japanese motor industry that it is at last turning the corner after four hellish years. Vehicle sales (including cars, vans and lorries) were 12% higher in August than a year earlier. The jump for cars alone was slightly smaller, but it still confirmed that economic recovery was reviving a market which had been in decline since 1990.
